Fernando Alonso was born in Oviedo, Spain, in 1981 and he is he only Spanish driver to win a formula 1 title, something that he has done twice.
His father supported his career early on, and served him as mechanic during his Karting years. After climbing up through Spain’s racing categories becoming champion in the Euro Open Nissan Series in 2000. He then moved to Formula 3000 where he finished 4th earning the attention of Formula 1 recruiters.
Alonso decided to sign with Minardi, and even though the team’s car wasn’t reliable or competitive, he outscored his teammate and at times looked faster than better opponents (Benetton among them).
By now, his manager Flavio Briatore, usually with a good eye tor talent, hired him as a test driver for the 2002 season, doing 1642 laps in the process. Since then, the Spaniard’s career began to rise at full speed.
